It sometimes seems like mobile home and RV parks are tornado magnets, and the reality is that cars, mobile homes, and RV's are not safe places to shelter from tornadoes. Unfortunately, many RV parks don't have a sturdy shelter for people to take refuge in when they leave their RVs.
As explosive growth in Bastrop County is leading to increased demand for affordable housing, it's not just travelers and snowbirds staying in RV parks, it's also long-term residents. To help meet the demand, my friend Steve Simmons bought land in Smithville and decided to build an RV park, and he did it with the weather in mind.
Bathrooms in the community / amenity center are constructed of cinder blocks with rebar, designed to withstand the elements and provide a safe shelter for visitors and residents. Steve also used lots of energy-efficient materials and design practices, and he even considered communication. In a natural disaster, phone lines may go down, but Starlink will provide a means for those in the RV park to stay connected.
When I was attending the National Weather Association meeting in Irving in September, I had the chance to interview Dr. Craig Ceecee, a meteorologist who researched the lack of sufficient tornado shelters and is actively promoting the need for more public and private shelters. He has a website called findyourtornadoshelter.com with a map of known shelters, and he said mobile home and RV occupants are some of the populations that need those safe places the most.
Both Craig and Steve hope others will be proactive and spend the extra time and money to build safer RV parks to hopefully save lives.
